With Shreya Iyer’s Debut Ton Alarm Bells Sound For Ajinkya Rahane

New Delhi: They say you are only as good as your last performance, and considering the way Shreyas Iyer batted in his debut Test match against New Zealand in Kanpur’s Green Park stadium, he has set the bar high.

Not to forget that he is getting unconditional support from head coach Rahul Dravid, who could put Iyer in the Test XI in days to come – seniors like Ajinkya Rahane could come under pressure.

If Dravid is a story of self-belief, he would love to see those who can show him his reflection. And from what it appears, Dravid is not going to give up on Iyer that easily.

The only good thing is that Iyer is equally ready for the challenge. So what if he has been in and out of the team in the shorter formats?

At one point, he was a regular at number four. Iyer scored some runs as well in that position. However, a sort of over-confidence shook his very foundation. He made some daring statements like the debate surrounding No 4 should end before his emergence at that position.

It didn’t go down well with the management. He was again in and out of the side, and a freak injury saw him losing the franchise captaincy to Rishabh Pant.

Now that Iyer has been told to keep his words under check by his management firm and has come under the tutelage of Dravid, he can look ahead for greener pastures. For all we know, the Green Park performance may have helped his cause immensely.

It has come down to a level that India may have to drop a regular opener in Mayank Agarwal to accommodate both captain Virat Kohli and in-form Iyer for the next Test match against New Zealand in Mumbai.

The Indian team management may also ask Cheteshwar Pujara to open the innings to accommodate Iyer in the middle-order when Kohli returns.

Up next, when the team plays in South Africa, a senior pro like Rahane would have to show consistent form to keep his place intact in the playing XI.

In simple words, it means that Rahane would have to score big knocks in the next few days to live up to his expectations. For now, it is Iyer all the way!
