Ons Jabeur, the world’s No. 7 female tennis player from Tunisia and the first female tennis player to win a slam in the Arab world, has her heart in the right place. She vowed to donate some of her prize money from the ongoing WTA Finals in Cancun to the aid of Palestine and prayed for peace to return to West Asia soon.
“I’m very happy to win, but to be honest, I haven’t been very happy lately. The situation in the world doesn’t make me happy, so I feel like this…” Jabeur, 29, said before bursting into tears after his league stage win on Wednesday (November 2).
“It is very difficult to see children and babies dying every day. This is very sad, so I decided to donate some of my reward money to help the Palestinians. Despite everything that happened, I can’t be happy with just this win. Sorry guys, this was supposed to be about tennis but it’s so frustrating watching videos every day… Sorry, this isn’t a political message, this is humanity. “I want peace in this world, that’s it.”
Israel began airstrikes and assaults on Gaza in response to attacks by Hamas militants on October 7. It was reported that more than 9000 Palestinians, including 3760 children, were killed in Gaza.
