Along with the famous Theva art of Kanthal, the woodwork, which has been famous for years, is now on the verge of extinction. In the technological age, even its importance has not survived. Along with this, the Khirni trees which are useful in it have also remained very less. Due to this, even in the last decade, the artisans of woodcraft have also remained a few. In such a situation, the artisans who are left are also using Nilgiri (Eucalyptis) wood instead of Khirni. Due to which there is an attempt to keep alive the woodwork which is losing its existence.

This business flourished due to the availability of wood in the forest since the princely period and for four decades of independence. After the shortage of wood for the last decade and the technological age dominated, this art has started going down the drain. The artisans associated with it are still a few.
fifty three
There were about fifty artisans associated with this art in the city till two decades ago. Now only three are left. These artisans also had a special identity in the region. Due to non-availability of wood, the work also got reduced. Due to this many artisans migrated from here, while many artisans took up other occupations. As a result, now only three artisans of the count are associated with this business. The youth of the families associated with woodworking have now turned away from this business.
These items are manufactured
The wooden items made in Kanthal were in demand far and wide. In this toys, roll-wheels, pestles, dandiyas, wall lamps, chakris, ash-tray, glasses, handles of agricultural implements, beds, sofas, etc. By the way, now more sills are made for furniture’s finds and designs. Kalyan Kumawat told that now the new generation is not even learning this art.
Kanthal ki Chaupar till Marwar
Ishwar Khairati, an artisan associated with woodcraft, told that the chaupads made here used to go till Marwar. Kumawat says that they make Chaupar from here and send them to Udaipur. From Udaipur to Bikaner, Jodhpur, Barmer, Jaisalmer etc. go. There is a special demand for Kanthal’s Chaupad at these places.
Khirni trees less, shelter from Nilgiris
Due to illegal felling of trees in the forest, many varieties of trees are also getting reduced. In such a situation, the Khirni trees have also reduced. Due to which the work in woodwork is decreasing. Now the wood of the Nilgari tree is being used as its replacement. This wood is also attractive and soft like khirni wood.
