Man arrested after setting his Kitimat, BC home on fire – BC RS News

A man has been arrested in Kitimat, BC after setting his home on fire, according to police.

Mounties were called to a welfare check at a home on Swan Street around 5:15 pm Wednesday. When police arrived, the man threatened to harm himself, an RCMP source told Global News.

He reportedly refused to leave the house.

The police parked their truck in the driveway in front of the garage. When the man decided he wanted to leave, the source said he locked his car inside the garage door.

Footage from a neighbor’s security camera shows the garage door slammed shut as a vehicle pushes through it. It finally exploded, hitting a police truck as smoke billowed from inside.

An RCMP source alleges the man set his home on fire from the inside. The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, a source told Global News.

The man got out of the building before it was completely engulfed in flames and was arrested. In security footage, firefighters are seen arriving as the garage begins to burn.

The fire spread to a neighboring duplex.

BC RCMP did not immediately respond to additional requests for information.
