England ended their European Championship qualifying campaign with a tough 1-1 draw in North Macedonia on Monday but captain Harry Kane said they had plenty to be proud of to top their group and finish six points ahead of Italy.

England have qualified for next year’s finals in Germany with two matches remaining and they went through Group C undefeated in Monday’s draw.

In Skopje, Gareth Southgate’s side fell behind after debutant Rico Lewis was penalized for a foul in the box and Enis Bardhi scored after his penalty was saved.

They came back to balance in the second half with Jani Atanasov’s own goal.

Kane, who was substituted in the second half, told Channel 4: “We knew it was going to be a difficult game and it was difficult to play against a good team on a pitch where it is difficult to play our style of football.” We were the ones who were going to get the second (goal).

We can be really proud of the way the qualification season went.“ Full-back Kyle Walker, wearing the captain’s armband for the first time, said England should have won the game.

“It’s been a short week, we’ve already played two games,” he added. “That’s no excuse, we know we need to get three points from here but it’s something to work on for the future.”
