New Delhi: Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer has scored a brilliant century in his debut match. Batting against New Zealand at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur, Shreyas Iyer not only handled the Indian innings but also created a new history by scoring a century on his Test debut. With this, Shreyas Iyer became the 16th batsman of Team India to score a century in the debut Test.

Cricketer Shreyas Iyer was born on 6 December 1994 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. 27-year-old Iyer and his family are originally from Thrissur district of Kerala. Whereas now he is living with his family in Worli, Mumbai. Shreyas, who completed his schooling from Don Bosco High School, Mumbai from the same place, has graduated from Poddar College in Mumbai itself. Shreyas Iyer’s father’s name is Santosh Iyer and his mother’s name is Rohini Iyer and he has a sister.

Shreyas Iyer’s cricket career

Everyone’s dream in India is to become a part of the Indian cricket team. But very few people are able to achieve this position. Iyer had a dream of becoming a cricketer since childhood. Due to which this player started playing cricket at an early age. When Iyer was 12 years old and playing cricket at Shivaji Park Gymkhana, he was spotted by former Indian international player Pravin Amre. It was only after seeing him that Praveen thought that he would give cricket training to Shreyas. From here came the turning point in Iyer’s life.

The beginning of Iyer’s cricket career has been very aggressive. At the age of just 12, he used to bat fearlessly, seeing that his friends also started comparing him with Virender Sehwag.

Domestic Cricket: In 2014, Iyer represented the Trent Bridge Cricket Team. During this, he played 3 matches, scoring 297 runs at an average of 99, with the highest score of 171, a new team record. Iyer made his List A debut for Mumbai in November 2014, playing in the 2014–15 Vijay Hazare Trophy. He scored 273 runs in that tournament at an average of 54.60. Iyer made his first-class debut in December 2014 during the 2014–15 Ranji Trophy. He scored 809 runs in his debut Ranji season at an average of 50.56, including 2 centuries and 6 fifties. He was the 7th best scorer of the 2014–15 Ranji Trophy.

In the 2015-16 Ranji Trophy, Iyer scored 1,321 runs during the tournament, including 4 centuries and 7 fifties at an average of 73.39, becoming the top scorer of the Ranji season and the second player to score 1,300 runs in a single Ranji Trophy competition. In the 2016-17 Ranji Trophy, Iyer scored 725 runs at an average of 42.64 including 2 centuries and 2 fifties. He scored an unbeaten 202 in 210 balls against the visiting Australia team in a 3-day warm-up match in Mumbai, which was his highest first-class score.

In September 2018, Iyer was selected as the vice-captain of Mumbai for the 2018–19 Vijay Hazare Trophy tournament. During this, he scored 373 runs in 7 matches for Mumbai in the tournament. In October 2018, Iyer was named as the captain of the India B team for the 2018–19 Deodhar Trophy. He was also the highest scorer run-scorer in Deodhar Trophy with 199 runs in 3 matches.

In the opening round of the February 2018–19 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy tournament, Iyer scored the highest score by an Indian batsman in a T20I when he scored 147. In March 2021, Iyer was signed by Lancashire for the 2021 season of the Royal London One-Day Cup.

Indian Premier League (IPL): In February 2015, Iyer was signed by Delhi Daredevils for 2.6 crores in the 2015 IPL players’ auction. In this way, Iyer became the highest earning uncapped player in the tournament. After that he played continuously for Delhi. Iyer was retained by Delhi Daredevils in the 2018 IPL auction.

On 25 April 2018, he was announced as the new captain of Delhi Daredevils, replacing Gautam Gambhir. After consistent good performance, in the year 2021, Iyer had to be out of the Delhi team due to injury and the captaincy was handed over to Rishabh Pant in his place.

International career: In October 2017, Iyer was included in India’s T20I squad against New Zealand. He made his T20I debut for India against New Zealand on 1 November 2017, but did not bat. In November 2017, Iyer was included in India’s ODI squad (ODI) against Sri Lanka. He made his ODI debut for India against Sri Lanka on 10 December 2017. He scored 88 runs in 70 balls against Sri Lanka in the second ODI at Mohali. On 5 February 2020, in the first ODI against New Zealand, Iyer scored 103 runs in 107 balls, which is his first century in ODI cricket. Iyer made his Test debut against New Zealand on 25 November 2021.

Test debut and Kanpur connection

Shreyas Iyer made his debut for India in the Kanpur Test against New Zealand. He is the 303rd player of India. Iyer’s Test debut in Kanpur is a big coincidence.
