IIT Madras, Sri Ramachandra Institute Introduces Dual MD-PhD Program for Medical Engineering Aspirants ReadingS

Students pursuing MD courses from Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research (SRIHER) will now have an extraordinary opportunity to pursue Ph.D. at the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M).

The two respected institutions formalized this groundbreaking collaboration by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Thursday, November 16, 2023.

The signing event was held at the IIT Madras premises. This collaboration will offer a unique MD-PhD degree. Double degree program planned to start from the next academic year.

According to institutions, this is the purpose behind the MD-Ph.D. The aim of the double degree program is to train trained research scientists who can help in the domestic development of equipment for the healthcare sector. It will also help create researchers who can focus on preventive health services.

Students currently pursuing their MDs may apply for a Ph.D. program at IIT Madras. A panel of professors from IIT-M’s Department of Medical Sciences and Technology will select the students from among those who have completed their first year in MD. Successfully selected students will be provided with scholarships to complete their doctorate.

Students are required to qualify for postgraduate (PG) NEET (National Eligibility and Entrance Test).

According to The Hindu, IIT Madras director V. Kamakoti said: “When engineering and medicine come together, affordable, quality healthcare can become a reality. Almost 22 out of the top 100 among the 1.2 lakh students who have opted for Indian Institutes of Science Education.” To qualify for BS Medical Engineering course and Research (IISER) test, he attended IIT Madras.”

It is also worth mentioning that IIT Madras recently opened the Department of Medical Sciences and Technology in May this year. It currently enrolls up to 150 students each in its undergraduate and graduate programs.
