A 45-year-old former PGI doctor has been arrested for allegedly raping a widowed staff nurse and taking Rs 1.50 crore from her on the pretext of marriage.
The accused has been identified as Dr TM Rajesh Kumar, a resident of Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala. He was arrested in Thiruvananthapuram and brought to Chandigarh on Sunday. The person, who was taken to the local court, was referred to the courthouse. A team headed by Sub-Inspector (SI) Chander Mukhi, in-charge of PGI police station, arrested him.
Police said the accused was working in the dental department of PGI. He resigned from PGI and opened his private clinic in Kerala in 2018.
A police source said: “The victim staff nurse, whose husband died in 2017, lodged a police complaint against the doctor at the public window of the police station in Sector 9 last month. A high-level investigation was ordered and the guilt of Dr TM Rajesh Kumar was established. In her complaint, the woman alleged that TM Rajesh Kumar convinced her to get married and had physical intercourse on this pretext.

He also claimed that he started receiving money from his promise that he would build a house in Kerala and that they would settle there after marriage. In his complaint, he alleged that TN Rajesh Kumar not only received cash from me but also collected his account’s bank details, password etc. He also claimed that he was aware of the information. “He transferred the money from her account to his own without her knowledge.”
The source said: “The accused TM Rajesh Kumar had resigned from PGI and moved to his home state where he had opened his private dental clinic in 2018. After resigning, he was in constant contact with the victim and the victim also alleged that he had physical relations with her in a Delhi-based hotel on the pretext of marriage.” “In 2022, when the victim demanded his money back, the defendant stopped participating in phone calls.”
A police officer said: “Dr TN Rajesh Kumar was aware of the FIR against him but refused to join the police investigation. He is married but separated. We arrested him tactically while sending one of our team members posing as a patient. We caught him when he approached the patient. We informed our counterparts in Kerala of his arrest.” “We reported it. The victim is about 10 years older than him.”
A case was registered at Zone 11 police station.
