Five women from Delhi filed a petition in a Varanasi court seeking permission to visit the idols of Hindu gods on the outer wall of the Gnanavabi Masjid near the Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. Hearing this petition, the court constituted a committee to conduct an inspection and video recording of the Gnanawabi Masjid.

A petition was filed on behalf of the mosque that the court should not hear this case because the mosque comes under the Waqf Board and the pre-independence state of worship should continue in places of worship other than the Bab Masjid.

In this case, the investigation team at the mosque reported that there is a Shivlinga form in the small pool there, which caused a lot of doubt.

The Muslim side filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking a ban on this case.

Subsequently, the Supreme Court ordered that the district court can decide whether the case is fit for trial.

Following that, a petition was filed in the Varanasi District Court on the part of the Muslims that the case was not fit for trial and on the part of the Hindus that the mosque was built there after demolishing the temple.

Among them, District Judge AK Visvesh, who first heard the petition from the Muslim side, said, ‘Special Worship Act, Waqf Board Act and Kashi Vishwanath Temple Act are not an obstacle to hear the petitions filed by the opposite side (Hindus). Therefore, the petition filed on behalf of Anjuman Ind Jamia Masjid Committee (Muslim) is dismissed. The hearing on the petition of the opposite party will be held on September 22,’ he ruled on Monday.
