ISLAMABAD, November 03 (Online): Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa stated that the general elections will be held on February 8 by the grace of Allah Almighty.
He made these remarks while presiding over a 3-member bench of the Supreme Court (SC) during the hearing of multiple demands for timely elections within 90 days of the dissolution of assemblies.
The document signed by President Arif Alvi regarding the opening of ballot boxes in the country within 90 days was presented to the YK.
A response duly signed by the 22nd class officer from the Presidency was submitted to the court. The President approved the general election to be held on February 8, 2024.
The Election Commission (EC) presented the notification to the YK regarding the holding of elections on February 8,
The court dismissed all petitions by court order.
The court issued a written order to complete the petitions for the election to be held within 90 days.
Recently, it was said in writing that a Prime Minister was dismissed by a vote of no confidence. The vote of no confidence plunged the country into a political crisis. SC took suo motu consideration on political matters. The President dissolved the National Assembly (NA) after the no-confidence motion was not received. It was an unconstitutional process. The President cannot dissolve the parliament upon the advice of the Prime Minister if the motion of confidence is not received. Unconstitutional dissolution of the parliament constitutes treason.
Surprisingly, the SC stated that the chairman had no authority to dissolve the meeting. But he was using authority.
On the other hand, the power of the president to set a date was not used.
The court stated that the people cannot be kept away from elected representatives. Constitutional institutions can only make important decisions for the benefit of the people.
In the court decision, it was stated that the election date was decided after the meeting on November 2, 2023.
