Ankita, a resident of Srikot in Pauri, worked as a receptionist at Vantara Resort and was missing since September 19.

The police have arrested three accused in the case – resort operator Pulkit Arya, manager Saurabh Bhaskar and assistant manager Ankit Gupta.

The main accused Pulkit is the son of Haridwar BJP leader Vinod Arya. Vinod Arya has also been a minister of state in the past. Arya was given the status of Minister of State with his appointment as the President of Uttarakhand Mati Kala Board.

Pauri Garhwal SSP Yashwant Singh said, “During investigation, it was found that Ankita had left the resort with three people and did not return. These three suspects were Pulkit, Ankit and Bhaskar. We arrested him and produced him before the court on Friday, from where he was sent to jail on remand.

Ankita’s body was recovered on Saturday, the day after the arrest of the BJP leader’s son. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has given this information. He said that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to probe the matter.

On Saturday, Dhami tweeted and said, ‘The body of daughter Ankita was recovered this morning. My heart is deeply pained by this heart breaking incident. In order to get the harshest punishment to the culprits, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) P. Renuka Devi ji has formed an SIT and ordered an in-depth investigation of this serious matter.

He said, ‘Action has also been taken by the bulldozers on the illegally built resort of the accused late yesterday (Friday) night. It is our resolve that the culprits of this heinous crime will not be spared.

Apart from the government action, the anger of the local people has also erupted over the incident. In Rishikesh on Saturday afternoon, locals set fire to the BJP leader’s son’s resort.

Meanwhile, an angry mob of locals allegedly attacked the vehicle of Yamkeshwar MLA Renu Bisht on Saturday as she reacted late to Ankita’s murder.

Police officials told news agency ANI that Ankita’s body was recovered from the Chilla canal in Rishikesh. A police officer said, ‘The deceased’s brother and father were present there, they identified the body. The body has been taken to AIIMS Rishikesh.

Pauri Garhwal DM Vijay Kumar Jogdande said, ‘Punchnama was done in front of the family and postmortem is being done. It has been decided to conduct the postmortem through a panel. The entire process is being videographed.

However, after the post-mortem of Ankita at AIIMS Rishikesh on Saturday evening, the body has been handed over to the relatives.

Jogdande further said that all the three accused have been arrested and their statements have been recorded. The accused had pushed Ankita into the canal. SDRF searched the area. The water level was high, so the level was lowered and his body was recovered this morning.

Earlier on Friday, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, terming the incident as tragic, had directed strict action against the perpetrators of this heinous crime.

Dhami had said that anyone who has committed this crime will be punished severely.

He had said, ‘This is a sad and heinous incident. Police is doing its job. Strictest action will be taken against the perpetrators of such heinous crimes. Justice will be ensured to the victim.

Additional Superintendent of Police, Pauri, Shekhar Chandra Suyal said that a case was registered in the Revenue Police Outpost Udaipur Talla in connection with the disappearance of Ankita.

He said that in view of the seriousness of the matter, he was handed over to the Laxman Jhula police on Thursday (22 September), which arrested the three accused within 24 hours.

Suyal told that the accused have accepted the matter of killing Ankita and throwing her body in the Chilla canal. He took this step after a dispute with Ankita.

On the other hand, the Director General of Police, Ashok Kumar said that sections of murder and concealment of evidence have been added against the arrested accused in the case, because after killing Ankita, he himself had written a missing report.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister has directed all the district magistrates of Uttarakhand to investigate all the resorts in the state and take necessary action against illegal or illegally operated resorts.

He said that the employees working in resorts, hotels and guest houses should also be informed about their condition and steps should be taken on complaints in this regard.

At the same time, BJP’s media in-charge Manveer Chauhan said that on the orders of BJP state president Mahendra Bhatt, action has been taken against the main accused Pulkit’s father Vinod Arya and brother Ankit Arya.

The BJP has expelled both of them from the party with immediate effect. Along with this, Ankit has also been removed from the post of Deputy Chairman of Uttarakhand OBC Commission by the state government.

Meanwhile, according to the Times of India, Uttarakhand Director General of Police Ashok Kumar has told that the owner of the resort was pressurizing Ankita to provide ‘special service’ to the guests.

At the same time, a Facebook friend of Ankita has also told that she was murdered because she refused to have physical relations with the guests on the demand of the resort owner.
