Global Sanitation Crisis: Urgency and Impact
Currently, 3.5 billion people do not have access to safe toilets and 419 million people still practice open defecation. This dire situation contributes to the spread of diseases and claims the lives of 1,000 children under the age of five every day. The crisis not only endangers public health, but also poses a threat to the environment, particularly affecting women, girls and other vulnerable groups.
As we approach the 2030 deadline to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6), which means providing safe toilets and water for all, urgent action is imperative. Unfortunately, the world is currently lagging behind and efforts to achieve sanitation targets need to be increased fivefold.
