JAKARTA: At least 11 people were killed and many others were injured in a collision between a train and a minibus at a level crossing in the east of Java, Indonesia’s most populous island, on Sunday, an official told local media.

The train was heading towards the port city of Surabaya when it crashed into a minibus carrying a dozen passengers at a crossing point in the East Java city of Lumajang around 20:00 (1300 GMT), broadcaster Kompas TV reported.

“Ten people died at the scene and one died at the community health center after receiving treatment,” said Indah Wahyuni aga, acting Lumajang district chief.

Four people, including a child, were being treated at a local hospital, the official said, adding that it was unclear whether they were relatives.

A Kompas TV reporter said after the accident: “There were no crossbars on the railway at that time, so there were no signs that could give information to the driver.”

Footage showed an overturned blue minivan carrying victims to medical beds.

Anwar Yuli Prastyo, a local official of state-owned train operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia, told Kompas that the train continued its journey after the accident.
